Ingredients
2 cups Toor or Chana or Moong Dal 1 can (2 cans for Moong) Costco diced tomatoes 8 cups water - ~4 tomato cans 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp chili powder 2 tsp salt 1 tsp mango powder (amchur) - not for Moong 1 tsp garam masala - not for Moong 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing) powder 2 dried red chilies - not for Moong 1 tsp mustard seeds - not for Moong 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 large red onion, minced 1 Tbsp ginger-garlic paste - not for Moong 1 level tsp salt 1 tsp cumin powder 2 Roma tomatoes, chopped - optional
Steps
Boil a) - f) in a pressure cooker. When the steam comes, lower heat to LO and cook for 2 (Toor), 6 (Moong) or 10 (Chana) minutes. Then shut of heat and let it cook. Open cooker and stir dal. If Chana dal,mash it a bit. Mix amchur and garam masala very well in warm water in a small bowl (katori). Make sure all lumps are gone. Add it to the dal and stir well. Heat oil and fry the hing. Then add the red chilies, mustard and cumin seeds After the seeds sputter, add the onions and ginger garlic paste and fry well. Add the cumin and salt and fry some more Add the chopped tomatoes and stir to mix Add the tadka to the dal and bring to a gentle boil. Place the pressure cooker lid back on and shut of heat. Let it stay for 10-15 minutes before serving.
