Geethu's Kitchen - Paru's Daal

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups Toor or Chana or Moong Dal
  2. 1 can (2 cans for Moong) Costco diced tomatoes
  3. 8 cups water - ~4 tomato cans
  4. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  5. 1 tsp chili powder
  6. 2 tsp salt

  7. 1 tsp mango powder (amchur) - not for Moong
  8. 1 tsp garam masala - not for Moong

  9. 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing) powder
  10. 2 dried red chilies - not for Moong
  11. 1 tsp mustard seeds - not for Moong
  12. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  13. 1 large red onion, minced
  14. 1 Tbsp ginger-garlic paste - not for Moong
  15. 1 level tsp salt
  16. 1 tsp cumin powder
  17. 2 Roma tomatoes, chopped - optional

Method:

  1. Boil a) - f) in a pressure cooker.
  2. When the steam comes, lower heat to LO and cook for 2 (Toor), 6 (Moong) or 10 (Chana) minutes. Then shut of heat and let it cook.
  3. Open cooker and stir dal. If Chana dal,mash it a bit.
  4. Mix amchur and garam masala very well in warm water in a small bowl (katori). Make sure all lumps are gone.
  5. Add it to the dal and stir well.
  6. Heat oil and fry the hing.
  7. Then add the red chilies, mustard and cumin seeds
  8. After the seeds sputter, add the onions and ginger garlic paste and fry well.
  9. Add the cumin and salt and fry some more
  10. Add the chopped tomatoes and stir to mix
  11. Add the tadka to the dal and bring to a gentle boil.
  12. Place the pressure cooker lid back on and shut of heat. Let it stay for 10-15 minutes before serving.
